The 3rd energy industry revolution is taking place where the key is the development of electrical power grids in the contexts of smart grids. Smart grids are playing a pivotal role in the development of a sustainable energy supply, enabling renewable energy generation and electrifying transportation in terms of electric vehicles in particular. There are huge challenges for designing, operating, controlling and the economic analysis of smart grids. These challenges necessitate the revolutionary changes to energy generation, energy distribution and energy consumption as well as energy storage. All the revolutionary changes will bring highly networked energy systems, namely Global Power & Energy Internet.

In this speech, Professor Zhang will discuss the scope of the Global Power & Energy Internet in the contexts of 3rd Energy Industrial Revolution and then explain the architecture of Global Power & Energy Internet. In addition, the key technologies and major challenges for building up the Global Power & Energy Internet, in particular HVDC Grids, will be presented, highlighting the worldwide technological developments and achievements as well as relevant developments at the University of Birmingham.

主讲人简介:

 

Professor Zhang is a professor of electrical power systems at the University of Birmingham. He is currently Head of Electrical Power & Control Systems Group, Co-Director of Birmingham Energy Storage Centre and Director of Smart Grid of Birmingham Energy Institute.

Professor Xiao-Ping Zhang has some twenty years international engineering and academic R&D experience ranging from China and Germany, to the UK with a focus on Electrical Power Systems Engineering.

Professor Zhang previously had several years industry experience for the development of commercial SCADA/EMS/DMS products for the monitoring, operation decision and control of electricity networks. He held a visiting position with the Electrical Energy and Power Systems Research Group at UMIST (now the University of Manchester), UK, and a position of Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow in Germany, which is a life-long honour.

Professor Zhangs research activities include smart grid technologies; FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) and HVDC applications in electric power systems operation & control; integration of renewable generation including wind and wave energy generation systems into power grids; hybrid vehicles, smart metering and electricity market modeling & analysis, etc sponsored by UK Research Councils, Industry, UK Government and European Commission.

Internationally he pioneered the concept of Global Power & Energy Internet and Energy Union.

Professor Zhang has many publications including 3 books on FACTS/HVDC and Energy Market Modelling where 2 of them are being translated into Chinese.
